As anyone reading my blog will know I am almost religious in following a more sustainable, organic lifestyle. We all know if we carry on consuming in the way we are, the planet and us will become extinct, it’s that serious.
We can make changes and give back to our beautiful world. I have just finished buying the plants for our wild meadow at the front of our house. Well, I say meadow, more like a stretch of grass along the front of the house, but it all helps. I hope to plant these out in March and let nature take its course.
I am a member of the Sussex Wildlife Trust and I give to this as I feel in this way I am making a difference. The World Wildlife Fund is another great charity fighting to protect our world and turn around climate change.
This brings me on to my subject today, pesticides. These are used for controlling or destroying pests of any kind.
POPs (Persistent organic pollutants) – are a range of compounds resistant to degradation. These chemicals remain in the environment for lengthy periods. These are associated with health risks including cancer, diabetes, hormone disruption & neurological disease.
POPs have been used as pesticides and although now banned in many countries, they are still in the environment.
I expect you have all heard of Roundup? The most widely used weedkiller. Manufacturers claim levels are safe and yet they are reported as a probable carcinogen by IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer).
These are found mainly in GMO crops, such as corn, soy, rape and beetroot.
Along with other pesticides these chemicals are linked with asthma, allergies, memory loss, cancer, hormone disruption, fertility issues and birth defects. Coeliac disease and gluten intolerance.
Over 300 pesticides are used in conventional farming.
If all farming became organic, pesticide use is estimated to drop by 98%.
These pesticides run off the fields and into rivers and streams affecting aquatic life and the surrounding countryside. They get into the animal food chain and into the food we consume. There is no escaping them.
Washing non-organic fruit and vegetables is paramount to limit pesticide exposure. Rinse well in clean water and use 3 tbsp of baking soda added to the water to clean thoroughly.
If Covid has shown us anything it’s how little in control we are. We need to invest in the care of the planet and our food production for now and future generations, if we want to remain fit and well.
